First understand, near-future sci-fi is just about my favorite kind of sci-fi.  The Matrix, Mad Max, et. al., all that kind of stuff really stimulates my nerd glands.  I was really expecting to love Children of Men, but it was not to be. Now I loved the setting, the atmosphere, cinematography, and color palette (or lack thereof); the acting was ok but nothing too special. I think this movie had a lot going for it but they ended up missing the mark pretty badly.  To call the pacing glacial would be an affront to (comparatively) fast moving rivers of ice.  Also, no one's motives were explained. [If you haven't seen the movie and don't want it ruined go ahead and stop reading.]  You might have heard that the movie is basically about all of humanity going infertile, well so there's this lady with a baby and all people are chasing after them but no one really ever explains exactly what they want with the kid.  Hope for the future sure, but how?  Make it a political bargaining tool?  Give it its own reality show?  All the audience really knows is that: in the future, bloody bloody violence is the most common form of conflict resolution.  Also there's no babies, except this one, who almost got named Bazooka (awesome).

I give the movie 3 bananas up for cool direction, hella-bleak atmosphere, and a complete pooch screw of what could have been a really cool story.
